I thought the same thing, Jack, strange, if not outright bizarre, that the
same forces which in the past have this pushed this species to southern BC
water, this time propelled unprecedentedly large numbers of Brown Pelicans
(Pelicanus occidentalis) into S BC waters but didn't shove a proportionately
large chunk of Elegants this far north. So I'd wonder what part of the
warm-water fishery was present for the pelicans but missing for the terns?
Or could there have been a weather pattern between here and Ocean Shores
WA--they were numerous enough there--which blocked them? What would have
stopped them from moving further north, either through incentive to stay
south or some prohibitory disincentive?
