Washington Far-Corners Expedition
(all birding all the time)
January 20-27, 1997

Hi Dave... Bye Dave --

I'm out of here, probably for a week or so in Eastern Washington. Armed only
with detailed maps, winter prep, optimism, and hopefully a good instinct for
areas on them which 'look' interesting and worthy of investigating.
Historical background and others winter time experience to most of the
targeted regions in the extreme corners is virtually next to none as near as
I've been able to uncover so far. So, I'm on my own, forging ahead into what
seems like a seldom if not untrodden frontier. Now, maybe everyone will speak
up with ideas and 'must not miss' suggestions, no?

Approximate Itinerary:

1/20 - Tuesday -- Grant and Adams Counties - to [Clarkston] (late)

1/21 - Wednesday -- Asotin County (E. Blue Mtn foothills) -- [Clarkston]

1/22 - Thursday -- Asotin County (Snake & Grand Ronde Rivers) -- [night
transit]

1/23 - Friday -- Pend Oreille County (NE Washington) -- [Ione?]

1/24 - Saturday -- Pend Oreille and Stevens Counties (NE Washington) --
[Colville?]

1/25 - Sunday -- Stevens and Ferry Counties (NE Washington) -- [Republic?]

1/26 - Monday -- not sure yet? Ferry County (NE Washington) -- [Grand
Coulee?]

1/27 - Tuesday -- not sure yet? Douglas County (Waterville Plateau) -- [home]
(late)?

(1/28 - Wednesday -- possible extension. Definitely home by Wednesday night.)

.....God, this is a big damned state. Maybe I should make it two weeks :-))

I'm skipping the Okanogan Highlands this trip. The Okanogan is a special
case; requires special treatment. Next time; maybe by late Feb. or early
March.

In any case, I'll be around to take care of the trash Wednesday night. As of
now, I think the weather looks reasonably good for the week. That of course
can change around here in a heart beat. As long as there is nothing major,
I'll probably stay to this schedule, more or less. Places in [brackets] are
'possibly' areas where I *might* be spending the night (camping or motel). Of
course this can all change if an area is either really really 'hot' or
conversely a total bore and bust (unlikely), or on a whim, I might even just
change my mind all of a sudden, add something and/or delete something else, or
maybe just drive to Florida '-). Anyway, good luck and enjoy your travels and
the Canadian Okanagan ski trip Dave. You & Trish will like it up there! :-))
Cheers! --Richard
