I have some bad news for you, but it's a common error most gull
novices make here on the Columbia River. You probably saw no
Herring Gulls (I also spent the weekend going through gulls and
only saw one). What you are seeing are Western x G-W Gull hybrids.
The center of the zone of integration is smack dab on the Columbia/
Wilapa Bay system.

Gull ID is a tough skill to build and trying it on your own is
a brave and commendable thing. I've been at it for 27 years and
still come upon birds I let go as Northern Pink-footed Gull.
