Tweets,
An adult CARACARA was observed several times this afternoon at Neah Bay by
Jim Shiflett and myself. It has been around, unknown to the birding community
since at least January 4th. It was seen directly south of the big fuel tanks
at the Makah Fuel tanks in downtown Neah Bay on a dead snag to the south. We
saw it there twice and it made a pass at the gulls at the senior center for
our other sighting. Jim got a good camcorder film record of it. It has also
been seen at the foot of the new marina jetty and flying out to the Waatch
River meadows.
The history of the bird is that this morning, Bud Anderson was called by
Jim Burlingame, apparently a casual birder, from Neah Bay who had been seeing
the bird off and on from January 4 saying he thought he had a Caracara. It was
a good description and Bud, who was busy, called Jim and asked him to check
it out. I was fortunate to be called by by Jim and asked if I wanted to try
for it with him.
