Dear all,

The crested caracara is indeed the Mexican national bird, also called
common caracara and Mexican eagle. See Palmer for an extended write up -
he says it is called *Carancho* in many South American countries. Peterson
(FG to Mexican Birds), though, says its harsh 'cacao, etc' call gave it its
Spanish name *Comecacao* - anyway, caracaras are gorgeous birds. All
scavengers are, aren't they :-) !!
