Not sure, but I'll pay closer attention to the Starlings, of which there
was a huge swirling flock nearby when I heard the "pewee". I had just
finished telling my students how good they are at mimicking other birds.

We have Varied Thrushes, but I didn't note any visually yesterday.

Good suggestions. I can definitely imagine a Thrush making that sound.
