I kind of like this idea: To have a small card (business card size)
made up that says generally, "We have visited your area for its natural
beauty, the birdlife, the forests, etc. We choose to spend our money
here because of what the area offers. Protect it, it is irreplaceable
and valuable. Thanks, Birder Bob." By leaving a card at B&B's, motels,
hotels, restaurants, gas stations, etc the 'locals' become aware that
part of their income is derived from the local natural history aspects
of their community or service area and the importance of protecting the
region.

This came from the South African Bird Net list.
