There's a book out on the subject, aptly titled "How to Spot an Owl," by
Patricia and Clay Sutton, 1994, Chapters Publishing, about $15. It describes
various techniques and behaviours, but I have yet to read it thoroughly. It
looked good enough in the store for me to buy it.
Keep an eye out for droppings and owl pellets, and use your ears!
Many of the owls I've seen were spotted in my car headlights just after
dusk.
