Columbia Estuary Report - 7/1/98

There are at least two very friendly RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKERS at
in Mayger, Columbia Co. at the community church. I suspect this
would be a reliable place to bring those out of town birders who
just have to see this species as it is on the way to the South
Jetty from Portland.

A PIED-BILLED GREBE with four youngsters and an AMERICAN BITTERN
were in the wetlands near the mouth of the mouth Skippanon River,
Warrenton this morning. A COOPER'S HAWK was circling the Fred
Meyer parking lot.

132 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and 1 LEAST SANDPIPER were at the SJCR.
About 200 Westerns were on Trestle Bay. An AMERICAN DIPPER was
on the jetty near the 3 rocks eating SEA ROACHS (_Ligia pallusii_)
and chattering to itself. It is my current belief that given time
I will be able to reproduce my entire Clatsop County list by just
sitting on the jetty.

The was a wonderful flat ocean and decent visibility for seawatch
this morning (complete list to follow in a separate post).
Highlights include large numbers of HEERMANN'S GULLS, RHINOCEROS
AUKLET, MARBLED MURRELET and CASSIN'S AUKLET.
