One neat area is Union Valley Rd. It's a loop road to
the east of the city of Chelan. I'm not sure of the
directions, but it's in the DeLorme atlas. You may
also wish to ask directions in Chelan.

Birds in the area include Gray Flycatcher (common
in the areas of scattered pine and bitterbrush),
Vesper Sparrow, White-breasted Nuthatch, Brewer's
Sparrow, bluebirds, and other drier-side birds.

You may also wish to check out Wapato Lake and
adjacent lakes northeast of Chelan. They feature
Yellow-headed Blackbirds and several species of nesting
ducks. However, these are popular fishing areas and
you will want to avoid them on weekends.

Subject: Lake Chelan area birding

I am planning a vacation in Chelan next week and would llike to know if
anyone know of some good areas around there to go birding. I will spend
a lot of time on Chelan Butte, but would like to know some other areas.
Also, does anyone have some 'special' birds I should watch for? Last
year we saw some Orioles nesting by the river and several nests on the
Butte--Nuthatches, Flickers, and Blue Birds, but I never knew some other
good areas to go. I appreciate whatever wisdom you can share. I am
trying to become a better birder, but the experiences sometimes seem to
come slowly!

Thanks a lot,
Joanne
