An interesting thing I realized about Redstarts when I was back in
Nebraska is that the males show a second-year plumage. I had a singing
bird that looked like a female except that the patches of color underneath
the wing were salmon colored rather than yellow. The new Peterson's
Audubon Guide and one other guide I looked at had this illustration. I
actually looked in Pyle's manual first, and this had an extensive
technical disucssion that was quite useful.

So, if you see a singing Redstart that looks like a female, check out the
sides more closely for the color. There is also supposed to be some black
on the face and head, but the bird I had only was darker about the lores,
making it deceptive.
