We spent the day atlasing breeding birds on a couple of blocks up the North
Fork Teanaway, in Kittitas County. As we were coming out this evening,
around 6:00, we stopped to watch a group of 50 or more Black Swifts
foraging in the general area of the 29 Pines Campground, which is situated
at the spot where the Jungle Creek Road turns off from the North Fork
Teanaway Road. The birds were flying low, from treetop height up to about
150 feet. Evidently there was something good to eat thereabouts. If
conditions hold, that might be a reliable place to get a good, close look
at these striking swifts for the next few evenings. It was beautiful
weather all day, temperatures from the mid-50s in early morning to a high
around 70, blue sky and white clouds. The swifts were not there in the
morning.
