Jim, from your description it sounds like a House Finch. Some House
Finches will show a yellow or orange color instead of the reddish that
most show. As in the "normal" ones the brightness or shade of yellow or
orange can vary considerably. This doesn't seem to be a regional
variant, as I have seen it in a wide variety of geographical locations.
