Columbia Estuary Report - 7/12/98

A roadkilled BARRED OWL was picked up from along the road at Mudd Rd
just off Lewis & Clark Rd on Thursday. It appears to be a hatching-
year bird. So far as I know, this is the first confirmed Clatsop Co.
record and hatching-year makes it doubly interresting. I'll be
going out to get a better fix on the recovery location this evening
and maybe hoot for owls.
It is currently in my freezer. Anybody want it? (Steve?)
I'll be passing down the I-5 corridor to Lebanon on Monday.

A PACIFIC GOLDEN-PLOVER in alternate molting to basic plumage landed
very briefly at the shorebird ponds of the South Jetty of the Columbia
this morning. Single ELEGANT TERNS were seen on the beach near the
jetty and at Trestle Bay near parking lot D with CASPIAN TERNS.

Six hummingbirds (presumably RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS) were seen flying
inland along the South Jetty over the space of an hour.
