My thanks to Bruce Whittington and Hank Vanderpol for handling the Rare
bird Alert in my absence during which I learned a great deal about the
birds and birding of our easternmost province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Monday, July 13
---------------
A WANDERING TATTLER, the first southbound migrant reported for the year,
was at the Ogden Point Breakwater in Victoria in the morning.

4 CASSIN'S AUKLETS were close off-shore at Clover Point in Victoria. 2
CASSIN'S AUKLETS had been seen from the ferry Coho on its route to Port
Angeles on July 12.


Sunday, July 12
---------------
A pair of Black-headed Grosbeaks were visiting a feeder at 3430 Carter
Terrace on Triangle Mountain in Colwood on July 12 & July 13.

A movement of 500 or more Western Sandpipers was noted at the Carmanah
light station on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island, and another 400
Western Sandpipers and 4 Greater Yellowlegs were at Bonilla Point.

Up to 50 Heermann's Gulls had accumulated at Clover Point in Victoria.

An American Bittern and a few Common Snipes were at York Road in Duncan.

The crossing of Juan de Fuca Strait by the Victoria Natural History Society
on July 12 found, in addition to the 2 Cassin's Auklets, numbers of other
Alcid species, a single Red-necked Phalarope and numbers of marine mammals.


Thursday, July 9
----------------
2 BROWN PELICANS and 2 or more Caspian Terns were in the Port Renfrew area
on the southwest coast of Vancouver Island.

2 Sandhill Cranes continue to be seen on the north side of Martindale Road
in Central Saanich.

Birding continues to pick up locally as southbound migrants begin to move
through the area. Get out to enjoy the weather and let me know what you see.
