Stan and Tweeters,
We felt that we had missed some really obvious birds such as
SAVANNAH SPARROW and COOPER'S HAWK. We were laughing that we had birded
for ten hours before we saw a RED-TAILED HAWK. We didn't start birding
until about 7:45 a.m., and did not go up on Mt. Adams on the Bird Creek
Road, where we would have had a better chance at the more Boreal species.
The potential for a days birding is great, there are several Bed and
Breakfast places in Trout Lake, but I would recommend camping at the Elk
Meadows R.V. Park. This park is well wooded with very attractively set up
camp spots and has places for tent campers too. Here we were not bothered
by insects but they are up to their traditional numbers in Indian Heaven.
Ken Knittle found Gray Catbird here and also wrote an article about Elk
Meadows R.V. Park, that I believe was published in the Washington Birder.
After he told me about the park I went up there to find, along
with the Catbird, a Least Flycatcher and that it was a spot we went to
when it was just the woods.. I have no idea how the early dawn or night
birding is, but I would love to find out.
