Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday July 16. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

A LEAST TERN was reported July 9 from Harris Beach State park near
Brookings. A probably ARCTIC LOON was reported from the Siuslaw River at
Florence July 12.
An INDIGO BUNTING was observed along the Applegate River south of Grants
Pass July 13.

With many birds in heavy molt and tending young most reports concern
shorebirds.

LEAST and WESTERN SANDPIPERS, both dowitchers, and SEMPALMATED PLOVERS
form the majority of migrant shorebirds now passing through the state. A
BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was at Elk River Estuary in Curry County July 15.

Three LONG-BILLED CURLEWS were at Coos Bay July 12. WHIMBREL and
BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER were at Pony Slough July 15, along with 82 GREAT
EGRETS.

A SANDERLING was near Waldport and another was at the South Jetty of the
Columbia River July 12. Also on July 12 an ELEGANT TERN, a GOLDEN-PLOVER,
probably an AMERICAN, and the first reported juvenile SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPER of the season were at the South Jetty of the Columbia River.

A BARRED OWL was found dead on a road near Astoria July 12, probably the
first record for Clatsop County.

A pair of WESTERN KINGBIRDS nested this year three miles west of Dallas.
This would be the fifth year a pair has nested at this site. A CALIFORNIA
TOWHEE was found July 15 along THE trail up Mt. Pisgah southeast of
Eugene. Two ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS have been in the same area.

An estimated 20-30,000 WILSON'S PHALAROPES and about 2000 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES were at Lake Abert in Lake County July 12. Also there that day
were 800 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and 2000 AMERICAN AVOCETS.

On July 15 several JUNIPER TITMICE were found in a juniper grove at the
south end of Langell Valley, southeast of Klamath Falls. Park near the
bridge at Malone Dam and check out the junipers in the area.

Thats it for this week.
