the South Jetty of the Columbia River, Clatsop Co., OR
22 July 1998 1015hr to 1120hr

Weather: cloudy, visibility to 3km
Wind NW 10-15; Temp 60F


Method: 60 minute station count at 100m west of "3 rocks" on
SJCR using 20x60 Bushnell spotting scope and 8x50 Bushnell
binoculars. Birds were sorted as to flyby, sitting on beach, sitting
on ocean or sitting on river.

Notes: A male OLDSQUAW spent most of the hour feeding in the surf
near the observation station. It did not have long tail feathers
was beginning to get blotchy around the crown and nape. I stopped
clock for 5 minutes to write details. There 55 hatching year CASPIAN
TERNS on the beach with adults including at least on banded juvenile.
COMMON MURRES were moving north in large strings (most flocks 100+).
