Here is the transcript of the South Idaho Bird alert for July 20, 1998.
This is the South Idaho Bird Alert for Monday, July 20th, brought to you by
the Idaho Museum of Natural History.
Highlights for this week include a pair of BLUE GROSBEAKS on Michaud Creek
west of Pocatello. Many shorebirds are moving through the area. BUSHTITS
can be seen at City of Rocks. At least three RED-NECKED GREBES are present
on Silver Lake in Harriman State Park. Finally, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS are
returning south.
A pair of BLUE GROSBEAKS are still being seen near the cattle guard about
three miles up Mihaud Creek, which comes in from the south along the
frontage raod about a half mile west of the Pocatello airport. This is near
C-6 on page 29 of the Idaho DeLorme Atlas. The male is a juvenile and
mostly brown, but his warbling song can be heard from several hundred yards.
The birds have been present for over a month.
Many shorebirds are being seen wherever mudflats are exposed. Sunday, over
900 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 400 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, and 200 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES were counted on ponds west of American Falls. Also, a single
HUDSONIAN GODWIT was seen flying over and heading due south in a flock of 25
MARBLED GODWITS. Mud flats should be checked regularly on the Springfield
Bottoms area and at Market Lake WMA, as this is a peak movement time for
adult shorebirds.
A flock of BUSHTITS was seen last week at City of Rocks National reserve,
which is at about C-2 on page 20 of the Idaho Atlas. To find them look in
the aspens in the valley behind campsites 46-49.
At least three RED-NECKED GREBES are on the north side of Silver Lake, which
is along the entrance road into Harriman State Park. This is near C-5 on
page 49 of the Idaho Atlas. OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS and TRUMPETER SWANS can
also be heard and seen here. Several NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES have been
singing near the boat dock on Island Park Reservoir. This area can be
reached just past Pond's Lodge off of US 20, about 8 miles northeast of the
entrance to Harriman State Park.
Finally, several male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS were seen this past weekend
visiting feeders near Tetonia. They can be looked for at any higher
elevations as they make their way south.
