At our rural home in Gray's River, W. Wahkiakum Co., we use only nectar
for hummers (columbines, foxglove, etc.) so our numbers are not as high as
those who use feeders experience. We had the usual several coming to the
red currant in March, and now have one nesting female that we know of,
while some years have seen two or three nests. The cold spring must have
been discouraging for them. A friend in Skamokawa, east of here, reports
the same thing you observe as to far fewer feeder hummers.

Swallows seem unchanged -- our usual two house-nests of violet-greens,
with many more hunting around the house and over the valley; and the usual
one pot-nest of trees, whose actual arrival I believe I observed, two
weeks after the VGs appeared. And this year we have a barn swallow nest
in the garage for the first time in years. All three species seem
abundant in the valley.

Tonight we confirmed that friends down valley really do have Vaux's swifts
in their chimney. We have heard three local reports of "chimney swifts."
