A couple of weeks ago I wrote asking for tips re birding in NE =
Washington. We just returned from a spectacular trip although the =
torrential rains and flooding last Tuesday and Wednesday (plus snow and =
hail) could have been omitted. Eastern Okanogan County, and Ferry, =
Stevens, and Pend Oreille counties have TREASURES+ACE- Take the =
Oroville-Toroda Cr. Rd east out of Oroville -- take a picnic or plan to =
lunch at the Chesaw bar, there are no other eateries probably for 50+- =
miles (also no gas). This is spectacular country -- especially in late =
May. High points: the series of small lakes (DeLorme, Page 116, 1-A/B) =
beginning with Beth Lake that skirt the road. It was as if each lake =
had been stocked with a different group of birds: Mom Barrow's =
goldeneyes with strings of chicks in one+ADs- black terns, common loons =
(almost tame) in another, all the teals and ring-necked ducks, etc. in a =
third. There is a trail along the far side of the string of ponds that =
gives great wild flower viewing as well as birding.

While we didn't see many birds in the Republic area due to the monsoons, =
we saw lots of great habitat and plan to return. Ditto farther east. =
Great natural meadow areas with marshes (and very unhappy yellow-headed =
and red-winged blackbirds whose nests had been flooded out), mixed =
timber, very mixed terrain (great high country roads -- that's where our =
highway tax dollars are being spent, I think). (By the way, Republic =
has several nice motels and the Esther's Mexican Restaurant is worth the =
trip.)

Question about black-backed woodpecker: At Priest Lake, Idaho =
(spectacular spot, not a lot of birds -- maybe due to 3+ACI- of snow May =
27), we were walking through a thinned pine woods and heard a weird =
buzzing noise that changed volume and pitch apparently randomly . We =
looked around and discovered it was coming from a perfectly symmetrical =
hole about 1.5 inches in diameter about 25 feet up in a skinny pine (an =
alive one, by the way). As we watched, a male black-backed woodpecker =
swooped in and darted into the hole and then emerged and flew off. He =
repeated this a short time later. Meantime the buzzing continued. My =
theory: the offspring use the buzzing noise as a street address to make =
sure Pa (or Ma) comes back to the right house (since all the trees =
looked pretty much the same, at least to our inexpert eyes). Any =
thoughts?????
