This was sent to me, and my long-time curiosity is assuaged. I assume it
would interest others on the list.

"The reason the section of road between the Teanaway and Cle Elum smells of
skunk is because there is a mink farm on the west side of the highway.
Evidently skunks are lured across the road by the smell of mink chow. A
couple of years ago, some animal rights folks released the minks. The
minks, never having been out in the "wild" before, headed across the road
and were hit by passing vehicles by the dozen. It really smelled then!"
