I stopped at the Steigerwald Lake Refuge, near Washougal, in
Eastern Clark County on my way home from work. There were 12 TURKEY
VULTURES in the newly mown fields with a single GREAT EGRET standing
amongst them. One pond held 6 male BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 5 LESSER SCAUP. 2
WESTERN KINGBIRDS were on the fence line nearby. At least 10 WILLOW
FLYCATCHERS were calling from the Cottonwoods where I saw a GREAT HORNED
OWL, a PILEATED WOODPECKER, 2 pair of LAZULI BUNTINGS, and 4 BULLOCK'S
ORIOLES. Over the Columbia River CASPIAN TERNS were calling while heading
both up and down stream, there were dozens of these birds present.
