This is an interesting story, because this past weekend I saw a house
finch "stuck" on the screen of a neighbor's windows. I watched it
struggle for a bit, trying to figure out if it really was stuck, and saw
it hang by one foot, upside down. So I put on my shoes and went to
rescue it, when I looked out and realized it was gone. The neighbor's cat
was inside the window, paws planted on either side of its face, looking
distraught.

All I can think is that the cat pounced (with window between it and bird)
and that frightened the bird enough to yank itself out. No toes left
behind, either.
