I birded Southern Skamania County working on my year list. The
best finding of the day was a COMMON LOON at Big Ashes Lake just West of
stevenson along Highway 14. Greenleaf Slough at North Bonneville produced
WOOD DUCK, CALIFORNIA QUAIL ,and RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER.
I drove up the Little White Salmon River to Oklahoma Campground
and then over the top of the Monte Cristo Range coming down in Trout
Lake. The wild flowers were spectacular at the higher elevations, Indian
Paintbrush, Wallflowers, and Penstemons carpeted the meadows. At the top
of Monte Cristo near the trail head for the #53 trail there were many FOX
SPARROWS singing. These birds had gray heads which surprised me.
