What serendipity! We are watching Hairys with red patches on their
foreheads. At first we thought we had a new race. It took quite a bit of
lresearching but we finally found a reference in Godfrey, Birds of Canada,
stating that juvenile Hairys have a crown of either red or yellow. The crown
color is less than 100% dense. Godfrey describes it as "reddish or yellowish
spots on the crown". A little later in the day we watched a crowned Hairy
being fed by an adult male.
