Wednesday, June 17, 1998, 10:50 PM. Hi. Scott Downes 361-7073. Today I went
over to Northrup Canyon in north Grant County near Grand Coulee Dam. I was
able to find the male ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK, a first year male, the bird was
actively singing from 10:00 until 1:00 when I was able to see the bird fly by
for the first and only time. The bird was well back in the riparian growth. To
find this bird, go half a mile from the gate at the end of the driveable area
of Northrup Canyon. The bird was noted from the three rocks that mark the very
first area that the bird was singing this morning and about another 100 yards
was the range that the bird was flying in the riparian growth. It is hard to
know if the bird was this secretive, only being seen once in three hours or if
it was the time of day. The bird was not noted until 10:00 and was finally
seen at 1:00 this afternoon. That's it. Good luck and good birding.
