This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho / eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

The male, first spring-plumaged ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK reported
just outside Electric City, Grant Co., WA last week by Jim Acton is
indeed elusive. The bird is up Northrup Canyon, just off WA 155.
Follow the road up the canyon to the gate. Continue on foot down the
road about 0.5 mile into the brushy area. A pile of rocks three high
marks the southern and northern ends of the birds apparent range.
Scott Downes spent 3 hours searching and following the bird as it
sang intermittently, all for one quick view on June 18. Others have
made almost daily trips without seeing the bird. Specifically, it's in
T27N, R30E, Sec 5. WA DeLorme 85, AB-8.

A LEAST FLYCATCHER is residing in the Davenport, Lincoln Co., WA
cemetery. The cemetery is just outside Davenport on the west end of
town. This bird, found by Jim Acton last week, was seen by Dave
Bodett (sp?) on June 13, esp. in the eastern third of the cemetery.

Another Washington LEAST FLYCATCHER is northwest of Yakima,
Yakima Co. in the Wenas Creek drainage. Andy Stepniewski reports a
calling bird 1/8 mile north of the stream crossing or about 1 mile south
of the campground. WA DeLorme 50, B-2.5.

An Idaho LEAST FLYCATCHER is present in the now-usual spot near
Rose Lake, Kootenia Co. I saw one, maybe two birds on June 17 in
the exact same spot where they have been seen the last four Junes.
The bird was in the birch/cottonwood stand on the north side of ID 3,
between milepost 113.5 and 113.8 in the Coeur d'Alene WMA. I'd
recommend parking on Rose Creek Road at milepost 113.8 and hiking
back along the highway almost to within a hundred feet of milepost
113.5 and Shady Lane Road, then head down into the woods. ID
DeLorme BC-3 and Chain Lakes Route on p. 56 of The Birders' Guide
to Idaho. Just to make it interesting, there are also several WESTERN
WOOD-PEWEES in this stand, and many RED-EYED VIREOS.

The three male and one female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS can
still be easily seen in the newly burned area of Riverside SP just
northwest of Spokane. This area is on the west side of the Spokane
River, and can be accessed via the Centennial Trail. Take Government
Way to Aubrey White Parkway and follow the parkway to its dead end.
>From here, hike about another 0.25 mile downriver. Jim Acton knows
of two nest sites and would be happy to show folks. Give him a call

Finally, Mike Denny reports a single, male HARLEQUIN DUCK was
above Lower Monumental Dam on the Snake River along the Walla
Walla and Franklin Co. border in southeastern WA on June 9. WA
Delorme 54, D-4.
