My family recently returned to our home in Eugene, Oregon from a
week-long stay at Pacific Rim National Reserve on the West Coast of
Vancouver Island. On Thursday June 18th, while hiking near the top of Radar
Hill we heard the unmistakeable "ka-chung" of the American Bittern. We
couldn't find this bird on the Park's bird list, so we reported this to a
ranger at the Information Center. He checked the Park records and
apparently this bird has never been reported at Pacific Rim Park. Has
anyone else heard or seen this bird here? And what would he be doing
calling near the top of Radar Hill?
