Hi Mary:

I had a nestbox of WB Nuthatches (4 young) about 30 feet from my front
door. The parents would catch insects then land on top of the box and
repeatedly bash the insects about. I don't know if it was to kill the
insects or to "soften" them up for the young or both. Hope you hear from
one of the bird behavior experts on Tweeters in response to this.
