There is a spot on the SW corner of Pacific Spirit Park at UBC, where
the university has a dump site, that I have found to be a good weekend
birding spot. No workers or park visitors, just birds. Yesterday (June
28th) was a very good morning indeed, especially for Woodpeckers!

In one small area my partner Bev and I saw a male and female Downy, male
and female Hairy, a male Pileated, a female Red Breasted Sapsucker and
juvenile, and the star of the day, a male Three-Toed woodpecker
(Picoides tridactylus dorsalis). While Bev and I are convinced it was a
Three toed, I also know that it can be confused with a juvenile Hairy.
We observed it for at least 20 minutes and it had the basic field marks
(head shape, side breast barring and hard, sharp pik call) and I
understand that there has been other unconfirmed sightings in Pacific
Spirit.

Other sightings of the morning in no particular order:

Black Capped Chickadee
Chestnut Backed Chickadee
Spotted Towhee
Band Tailed Pidgeon
Great Blue Heron (in flight)
American Goldfinch
House Finch
American Robin
Rufous Hummingbird
Barn Swallow
Violet Green Swallow
Northern Rough-wing Swallow
Tree Swallow
Rock Dove
European Starling
Osprey (in flight)
White Crowned Sparrow
Song Sparrow
House Sparrow
Olive Side Flycatcher
Pacific Slope Flycatcher
Swaison's Thrush
Northwestern Crow
Winter Wren
Bewick Wren
Red Breasted Nuthatch
Bushtit
Raven
Cedar Waxwing
Brown-headed Cowbird

I was surprised at the number of flycatchers (6-10 of each species) in
the small, few acre area.
