This is the Vancouver Bird Alert for Friday, February 27, Saturday 8:30 am
update.

The featured birds for today's report are XANTUS' HUMMINGBIRD, MOUNTAIN
BLUEBIRD and out of town SLATY-BACKED GULL.

Sightings for Friday, February 27:

The XANTUS' HUMMINGBIRD continues to be seen at 221 2nd Avenue in Gibsons,
but now it only comes early in the morning and late in the afternoon. For
more information on this bird please call Gerry Patterson in Gibsons at
604-886-7757.

A MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was in Point Roberts at the corner of Marina Road and
Edwards Drive.

The AMERICAN DIPPER was again seen and heard on Blake Drive. To access this
site you take Highway 91 north and go east on 72nd and north again on Blake
Drive for 2 blocks. You then walk through a gate and look right into a
creek, where the bird is usually seen.

The TUFTED DUCK was under the stone bridge on Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park.

The CLARK'S GREBE was at Inglis and Agar on Sea Island in Richmond.

The SWAMP SPARROW was seen and heard in Reifel in the outer marsh just
north of the observation tower.

A LONG-BILLED CURLEW was at Crescent Beach near the railway trestle.

Out of town, the 3rd winter SLATY-BACKED GULL was seen in Duncan on
Vancouver Island on Wilson Road, across the street from its previous
location of Phibbs Road and Bench Road.

Thursday, February 26:

A second year ICELAND GULL was seen at Burn's Drive and 96th Street in
Delta.

The 3 AMERICAN AVOCETS were at their usual location at the mouth of the
Serpentine.

A BARN OWL was seen at the woodlot along the causeway at Iona Island.

The WILLET and 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS were at the base of the Tsawwassen
Jetty.

Wednesday, February 25:

A Kumlien's ICELAND GULL was seen at the tip of the south jetty at Iona.
This area also appears to be a staging area for scoters heading north, and
vast numbers of them may be seen flying past the jetty as the tide turns,
with 11,500 SURF SCOTERS, 1,772 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and over a 100 BLACK
SCOTERS. Also in the area were 389 RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS, 2500 MEW GULLS
and 9 PACIFIC LOONS.

A MARBLED GODWIT was seen at high tide near the mansion located west of
88th Street in Delta. A LONG-EARED OWL was on 72nd Street.
