Yesterday Margie Palmer and I went up to the Samish and Skagit
Flats for the day. It was so nice to be birding and to have to wear sun
glasses for a change.
On Samish Island Road, before we actually crossed onto the island,
we found a very cooperative PRAIRIE FALCON. We also located a female
AMERICAN KESTREL. We have seen this same Kestrel in this spot on two
other occasions. The Kestrel sits on the wires on the East side of the
road.
At the mouth of the Samish river we found a male BELTED KINGFISHER.
South of the main road there was a lone immature TRUMPETER SWAN. I
don't believe I have ever seen a lone immature swan without its family
unit and so I wondered if the bird could be in distress. It remained in
this location for most of the day and did not seem to be feeding.
We walked on the dike north of Edison and found one SHORT-EARED OWL.
There were the ususal flocks of ducks and dunlin in the area as well as
many small flocks of Swans.
