My wife and I spent Feb. 13 to Feb. 25 in Magadan, Russia. It is four
hours west of Anchorage, Ak by jet. The temp was from a low of -35 C
to a warm -15 C. We had time to bird every day. Except for the
ravens all birds were found in the city. We saw no birds in the hills
or woods out to 20 miles in several directions.
Rock Dove every day
Northern Raven several every day
Pine Rosefinch (Grosbeak) 5 birds seen 4 one day and 1 another
Common Redpoll seen on 4 days
Willow Tit 1 seen each of two days
Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) One small flock by one building
where they could get in a warm hole
Spotted Nutcracker one seen
In the summer several neat birds can be found in the city.
Long-toed Stint, Temminek's Stint, Spectacled Guillemot,several
Wagtails, Stonechat, Middendorff's Grasshopper-Warbler, ( it nest
near the center of town), Yellow-breasted Bunting, and others
If you get a chance to go July is the best month or late June.
Happy birding; Larry and Jacque Goodhew
