Michael--wish I could add something more about Mrs. Behn--she does, indeed,
sound like an extraordinary person.

About the warblers: the Black-throated Gray usually appears every year during
the last week in April or the first week of May (date may depend on when we
just happen to be outside to hear it!), but the Townsend's is always
unexpected and makes a very brief appearance here. We have mostly Douglas Fir
(certainly not old-growth) with a scattering of other coniferous trees and a
fair number of deciduous trees and shrubs. Obviously, I didn't know that the
two "swapped" songs and the next time I'm in suitable habitat I'll try to
track down the singer and see if I guessed right!

The E. Wigeon with a small flock of American W, Mallards (and, in this
instance, 2 bright male Hooded Mergansers) was in an area of partially exposed
mudflat and slough-not a very pleasant place to bird--but it usually produces
a Belted Kingfisher and large number of gulls which I've almost quit
speculating about!

There's a lot of activity around our feeders now and after having had only
female Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers this winter, yesterday the first male Hairy
W. showed up at the suet. I wonder where he has been gallivanting! or
whatever.
