The subject of potential, or non-effects, of high voltage electric
transmission lines (250,000 volts and up) has been intensively studied
since at least the early 1970's. (Used to be fairly well up on this as I
worked as an energy planner for 18 years, in close association with
public health/engineer types whose job it was to know at this stuff.) Up
until recently, the conclusions were indeterminate - largely due to the
evidence not being clear cut. The results of the studies were such that
scientists of either persuasion (yes there is an effect, or no there
isn't) could use the results to legitimately argue that the effect/lack
of effect was there/not there, at least in humans (I seem to remember
one study which purported to show evidence of disorientation in honey
bees). I understand that in the last two years there have been some late
studies which seem to provide evidence of some kind of effect, but still
not exact. As often happens, I can't find the references on the most
recent results. Will check around and try and see if there have been
even newer studies.
