This morning at the Chittenden Locks I saw a m/f pair of Kingfishers
flying together, the first pair I've seen together this winter. They flew
west to east over the canal, then veered N. into the trees near the admin
building. One was heard as well, but I couldn't tell which. They were
about 30 feet over the water with the female ~10 ft. behind and a few
feet below the male. Scott, if you're reading this I have two other
accounts. Last Wed. One female seen but not heard, Sat. one heard but not
seen. I meant to report these to you directly, but alas, I didn't.
The Mergansers seem to be disappearing, one male, three female
Red-breasted standing on the beach, and five female common in the fresh
water near the boathouse. ~40 Barrow's Goldeneyes and 4 common (2 pairs),
only a few Wigeons, 2 Horned Grebes, 1 Pied-billed Grebe (rare for the
locks), 1 Red-Necked Grebe, 1 Mature Bald Eagle and an unconfirmed report
of a Peregrine Falcon on the power tower next to the railroad bridge.
It's a "good" year for Steelhead, I've seen three, there were about five
moving through the fish ladder, but I didn't stick around to see how many
they caught. Brian, the fisheries guy reported the Peregrine, btw. Also,
there was a lone female Bufflehead following the Goldeneyes. She looked
lost. As usual, tons of crows, etc. And Herons. Lots-o-Herons.
