Hello, this is Portland Audubon Society's Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday March 12. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

Two BLUE JAYS are now in Burns. They are most often seen around S. Egan
and Taylor Streets, but do move around a bit.

The SLATY-BACKED GULL is still being seen at the Pellet Plant on Sauvie
Island. Many of the gulls have moved out so this bird may not be around
much longer.

The male TUFTED DUCK is still being seen at Bingen, Washington. A
possible hybrid TUFTED DUCK was on the Columbia River at the Biggs grain
elevator east of The Dalles. It was in a large flock of GREATER and
LESSER SCAUP and COMMON and BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.

The BROWN THRASHER is still being seen near the intersection of Bond
Butte and Tub Run Roads northeast of Harrisburg. The LARK SPARROW is
still along Bond road near Brownsville.

The WHOOPER SWANS and BEWICK'S TUNDRA SWANS are still at Lower Klamath
NWR. A blue phased ROSS'S GOOSE and two blue phased SNOW GEESE are also
being seen there.

Up to 10 wintering SHORT-EARED OWLS are still near Vancouver Lake, north
of Vancouver, Washington. A WESTERN BLUEBIRD was on the south side of the
Portland Airport March 5. They are now becoming more conspicuous in the
Willamette Valley as they return to their nesting sites. PINE SISKINS are
now coming to Willamette Valley feeders after being scarce all winter.

On March 8 a group of 30 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were along 92d Avenue near
Fanno Creek in the Tigard area of SW Portland.

A BRANT was among a flock of CACKLING CANADA GEESE at Baskett Slough NWR
March 6. The very black HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK continues along
Livermore Road north of the refuge. A CANADA GOOSE family with six
goslings was at the Penitentiary Pond in Salem March 7. On March 11 two
downy GREAT HORNED OWLS were walking on branches near their nest in
Ankeny NWR.

Both WESTERN and MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS, SAY'S PHOEBES, and FERRUGINOUS HAWKS
were arriving in numbers east of the Cascades during the week. On March 9
over 200 SAGE SPARROWS were conspicuous along the road south of Fields in
SE Oregon.

At Wickiup Reservoir south of Bend March 11 were 2500 GREATER SCAUP and 9
HERRING GULLS. Both species occur at Wickiup in spring but not in such
numbers.

Thats it for this week.
