The Yakima Valley Audubon Society has some spaces left on the 15 March trip
on the Yakima Training Center to view Sage Grouse on their lek. We meet at
0430-that's right, 4:30 am. We are usually finished before 0730 (the birds
quit displaying as it gets light).Training center biologists are hosting
this event. The population here is one of two remaining in Washington.
Their status here is threatened due to habitat deterioration, due
especially to noxious weeds like knapweed, fires and disturbance by
military training.
This is a great opportunity to view these magnificent birds. Warm and
windproof clothing is important.
Contact me and I'll supply details like where and when to meet. Afterwards,
if there is interest, I can help lead an informal trip (car caravaning) to
go birding in the Columbia Basin searching for birds of the shrub-steppe
and other habitats
.
