Gene - there's quite a variety of Windows 95 sound editing software. My experience with 6 different programs is that 5 of them do a pretty good job, and I use all five because they're different enough that it's worth experimenting a little and finding which one(s) give(s) the best results for a particular recording and purpose. The five are

- Spectrogram 4.1.2a (older versions aren't as good) makes very detailed color-coded
spectrograms, but doesn't allow much editing, and only handles one file type.

- SASLabLight is the "lite" version of a professional program designed specifically
for editing and analyzing birdsong. The pro version has a four-figure price-tag....

- CoolEdit 96 is a general purpose sound-editor which allows quite a bit of manipulation
and handles a variety of file types.

- AWave is another general-purpose editor which allows conversion between a wide
variety of sound file types.

- Syrinx is a *really* nice program written by a UW doctoral student who works mainly
on Song Sparrows. It's still "under construction", but already has features that approx-
imate the pro version of SASLab, including graphic editing out of background noise,
songs other than the target bird's, etc. It's designed to support play-back experiments
in the field, amongst other things.

I've been using SoundEditPro on my old Mac IIsi for some years and like its
features but its real slow and I'd like to get something equivalent that'll
