BENTON COUNTY

February 22, 1998 - 8:49 p.m. - The RED-SHOULDERED HAWK discovered by Tony
Greager on January 31 is still present along the Yakima River in West
Richland. It is best seen from the twin bridges that cross the Yakima at
Grosscup and Snively Roads, which can be accessed from Hwy 240 NW of
Richland. (BLa)

DOUGLAS COUNTY

February 22, 1998 - 8:59 p.m. - On February 21, 200+ TUNDRA SWANS at Atkins
Lake, and on Central Ferry Canyon Road near Bridgeport, 12 COMMON REDPOLLS
and three NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS. Today, three SAGE GROUSE near Leahy
Junction; four LONG-EARED OWLS near Mansfield; and a EURASIAN WIGEON and
a PRAIRIE FALCON near St. Andrews. (PSu)

March 1, 1998 - 7:59 p.m. - On February 28, eight SNOW BUNTINGS on the
Waterville Plateau (roads muddy and difficult to drive). (JSt)

GRANT COUNTY

February 22, 1998 - 8:59 p.m. - On the 21st, a SNOWY OWL along L NE between
Third and Nelson, near Moses Lake; a PRAIRIE FALCON and a GOLDEN EAGLE at
Lake Lenore; and three RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS at Blue Lake. At Lake
Lenore today, 50 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES and a CANYON WREN. (PSu)

GRAYS HARBOR COUNTY

February 23, 1998 - 7:48 p.m. (amended 8:05 p.m.) - Report from a trip to
the coast today. Some birds relocated from previous reports: two RED
PHALAROPES at the Hoquiam sewage pond; two ROCK SANDPIPERS on the jetty at
Ocean Shores; a HEERMANN'S GULL on the beach there; the CLARK'S GREEBE
(possible intergrade) still at the Ocean Shores Marina; and a LESSER
YELLOWLEGS with several GREATER YELLOWLEGS at the Humptulips River delta.
At the Ocean Shores Game Range, a DUNLIN evading a MERLIN by diving
straight down at full speed into a patch of tall grass. At Murden-Whitten
(?) Road, W of Montesano right next to the Wynoochee River, a WESTERN
SCRUB-JAY and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. (DSw)

February 23, 1998 - 7:48 p.m. - Three NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS on territory,
up the North Fork Snoqualmie Road the evening of February 21st. (DSw)

KITTITAS COUNTY

February 22, 1998 - 8:59 p.m. - On the 21st, three TRUMPETER SWANS at
Ellensburg, and near Wanapum Dam, 80 GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES, 3 CHUKARS,
and a ROCK WREN. (PSu)

OKANOGAN COUNTY

February 21, 1998 - 10:12 p.m. - Report for February 20. Along the
Tonasket-Havillah Road just NE of Havillah, a flock of about 25
GRAY-CROWNED ROSY-FINCHES next to the road. Also about ten ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS along this road, and a bunch of HORNED LARKS. At the Sitzmark Ski
Area, 100 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS flying around a grove. Farther N on
Kipling Road, a flock of 200-300 SNOW BUNTINGS at a feedlot and on spill
behind it. (STe)

March 1, 1998 - 7:59 p.m. - On February 28, a LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE on the road
leading into Bridgeport State Park, and over 100 CALIFORNIA QUAIL inside
the park. On March 1, a SAY'S PHOEBE near the intersection of
Tonasket-Havillah Road and Fanchers Dam Road, 40 COMMON REDPOLLS and three
WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKERS; a GREAT GRAY OWL at an unspecified location;
over 35 WHIITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS near the Highland Sno-Park; and 300+
COMMON REDPOLLS 0.25 mile up Merry-Hahn (?) Creek Road. (JSt)

PIERCE COUNTY

February 23, 1998 - 7:48 p.m. - On the Tacoma waterfront on February 21, a
strange black-and-white duck with a ragged crest, a golden eye, and a
goldeneye-shaped bill -- probably a goldeneye hybrid of some sort. This
was at the corner of Rustin Way and 49th. (DSw)

SKAGIT COUNTY

February 27, 1998 - 8:04 a.m. - Report for February 24th. A PRAIRIE FALCON
0.5 mile N of the Samish Island Road "West 90," eating a DUNLIN on a
telephone pole. A "HARLAN'S" RED-TAILED HAWK on a telephone pole 500 yards
S of the "West 90." No SNOWY OWLS seen in the area. At least four
EURASIAN WIGEONS with AMERICAN WIGEONS in fields and in the S end of Samish
Bay. Near Field Road and Church Road, about 20 AMERICAN PIPITS. About 20
CEDAR WAXWINGS in trees by the Burlington McDonald's. On telephone wires
500 yards S of Conway, a flock of 46 MOURNING DOVES. (WWe)

March 2, 1998 - 2:09 p.m. - On the Samish Flats late this morning, 0.4 mile
N of the Samish Island Road "West 90," a PRAIRIE FALCON on a power pole.

SNOHOMISH COUNTY

February 26, 1998 - 7:11 p.m. - Today near Stanwood, nine species of
sparrows, including an immature HARRIS'S SPARROW and a VESPER SPARROW in
the hunting area at the end of Eide Road in the middle of the N-S hedgerow
that comes down off the main dike, along with quite a few WHITE-CROWNED and
GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS. The Vesper was with about 40 SAVANNAH SPARROWS.
Also along Eide Road, two "almost pure" NORTHERN "YELLOW-SHAFTED" FLICKERS
and two GREATER YELLOWLEGS. Just N of the Normano Farm on Norman Road, a
WHITE-THROATED SPARROW. (TAv)

February 27, 1998 - 8:04 a.m. - On February 24th, a mixed flock of about
150 TRUMPETER SWANS and about 50 TUNDRA SWANS just SW of the Stanwood
sewage ponds. (WWe)

March 2, 1998 - 2:09 p.m. - The VESPER SPARROW seen again this morning near
Stanwood with about 40 SAVANNAH SPARROWS. Walk around the gate at the end
of Eide Road and SW across the field to the hedgerow. (DBe)

February 22, 1998 - 1:27 p.m. - Today at Nisqually NWR, a SAGE SPARROW
