Subject: [SEABIRD:737] Marbled Murrelet jobs.

The Marbled Murrelet Project - Desolation Sound, BC. Canada

The SFU/CWS Marbled Murrelet Project requires field assistants,
crew leaders and a camp assistant for the upcoming field season. The
primary objective of the Marbled Murrelet Project is to determine the
extent of, and diagnose the demographic reasons for population changes of
the threatened Marbled Murrelet. We study murrelet biology in and around
Desolation Sound, British Columbia (about 200km north of Vancouver). Our
camp is semi-remote and facilities are basic. Everyone is provided with a
two-person tent and sleeping pad, and there is a large "Weatherhaven"
tent for general purpose use. A lot of the work is done at night or very
early in the morning. Preference will be given to Canadian citizens, but
citizens of other countries can be considered as volunteers. Please
apply before the first of April for one of the following positions:

Field Assistant: Capture and Monitoring of Marbled Murrelets.

Start dates: April 15, May 1 and June 1, until about August 15.
Assistants will be responsible for helping to collect data and perform
all duties associated with the capture, marking, recapture and monitoring
of the Marbled Murrelet. Some of the duties include: 1) set up and
maintenance of the floating mist net array, 2) travel in small boats at
night to spot light and dip net birds, 3) removal of birds from nets, 4)
band, measure, blood sample, and tag murrelets, 5) operation and
maintenance of radar unit, 6) perform marine surveys, 7) resighting and
radio-tracking of tagged murrelets from boats, 8) maintain data files,
9) share responsibilities of routine camp tasks such as camp maintenance,
cooking, cleaning, shopping and tracking of expenses. Assistants will
also be involved in cleaning and moving gear to and from the field camp
and camp set up. Note that the monitoring, capturing and banding Marbled
Murrelets take place during night hours.
Applicants must be in good physical condition, able to swim, and
comfortable in small boats. Previous experience conducting field research
is preferred .Useful skills include: bird banding, blood sampling,
seabird identification, removing birds from mist nets, small boat handling
and navigation by GPS or compass, radio telemetry and camping. Training
briefings will be provided for duties, if necessary.
Number of positions: 8
Salary: $1500 - $1700/mo depending on experience (food and accommodation
at field site is provided).

Field Assistant: Nesting Habitat of the Marbled Murrelet

Starting May 15 and ending about July 31. The field assistant is required
to learn and perform all duties associated with the monitoring of known
nests and established survey locations, finding new nests, and the
investigation of the effects of logging. Training briefings will be
provided for all duties, if necessary.
Assistants must be in good physical condition and enjoy hiking.
Useful skills include: knowledge of murrelet behavior in the forest,
plant and tree identification, back woods navigation by GPS or compass
and map, and wilderness camping. In addition, field assistants are
expected to perform routine camp tasks, including moving of gear to the
site, camp setup and maintenance, cooking, cleaning, shopping and the
tracking of expenses.
Number of positions: 3
Salary: $1500 - $1700/mo depending on experience (we provide food and
accommodation at field site).

Camp Assistant:

Needed between May 1 and August 15, to perform camp duties in our
semi-remote Desolation Sound field camp. Primary duties: cooking one meal
a day for 14 people and shopping for gasoline and supplies in town.
Additional duties include supervision of routine camp maintenance by
field assistants, tracking camp expenses, pick up and deliver mail for
the camp, transport outboard motors for repair and e-mail data files to
project manager.
Salary: $1200 - 1500/mo depending on experience (we provide food and
accommodation at field site)

Crew Leaders:
Crew leaders are expected to take part in and supervise the field
work described above. Leaders are not only expected to be proficient in
all the skills necessary for field work on Marbled Murrelets, but in
addition be able to motivate and direct crews of assistants. The primary
duties of the crew leaders are to ensure the collection of high quality
data and communication with the project managers. We need leaders for the
following parts of the project: 1) Dip netting, 2) Mist netting, 3) Marine
Surveys and 4) Nesting Habitat (with different skills required for each
job). Number of positions: 4 Salary: $1700 - $1900/mo depending on
experience (we provide food and accommodation).
