The one "slate-colored" junco that I've seen (which had no brown on
its back) also seemed completely uninterested in the other juncos in
the yard. There were about 20-30 "Oregon" juncos on and below my
feeder in the middle of my yard, but the "slate-colored" individual
stayed apart, hopping right along the fence line.

I wonder if anyone else has observed similar behavior?
