When in Patagonia don't miss the opportunity of visiting the
backyard hummingbird haven at the Paton's. When you drive from the town
of Patagonia to the sancutary from the East entrance, stop at the first
house on the left after you cross the creek. It is an easy place to find,
the fence has a "Hummingbirders Welcome" sign hanging on it. This is THE
spot to see VIOLET-CROWNED HUMMINGBIRD and many other species, including
the only record of CINNAMON HUMMINGBIRD for the U.S. The Patons have put
up an awning with rows of chairs and a guest book, an excellent place to
bird while waiting for the Sanctuary to open, or to sit and rest your
feet and exchange sighting information and birding spots with the other
birders.
Another good stop between Madera Canyon and Patagonia is the
Nogales Sewage Treatment Plant, I,ve taken about ten two week trips to
Southeast Arizona birding and always find this a good location. The
welcome given here to birders should beused as an example and be shown to
every public works director in the country. They only ask that you sign
in and out in their guest book, which also has sighting reports, and to
put a small magnetic cone with anumber on it and then you can DRIVE the
dikes between the settling basins inside the plant. Don't overlook the
empty basins as the mud puddles attract shorebirds and the weeds that
grow there last spring where full of hundreds of mirrating LAZULI
BUNTINGS and LESSER GOLDFINCHES.
My only other advice is smile and enjoy being in the company of
all those other birders, you wont believe how many there are, and how
much information you will get from them.
