Hi Tweeters,
I spent a bit of time in Arizona this last summer and I found the most
rewarding place to bird to be Sycamore Canyon. It's in the "other
locations" part of your ABA guide. This place always has a chance to turn
up some rarities, and it is by far the BEST spot for Elegant Trogan,
which may have arrived by the time your there. I had 8 calling birds
there in the Upper 2 miles of the canyon there on July, 4, 1997. When you
read the stuff about Sycamore in your book, and you here it telling you
to be very cautious...then follow it!!!!!. Don't go into Sycamore with
out an ample supply a water and another person! It's 10 miles to the
Mexican Border and back, so be prepared to go the distance. I advise that
you head all the way to the border despite what Talor may say. I got a
couple of birds I would't have gotten otherwise. Other birds of note when
I was there...Five-striped Sparrow, it might be a little early, but I'm
not real sure, and also 3 pairs of Montezuma Quail. Watch the road in on
the way to the Canyon for these suckers. I was there in 110 degree heat
and made it, but you have to be in good shape, so good luck..if you need
more details then what's in the book I can probably help you out.
On other places, I thought the Paton's feeders were hella awesome..don't
miss that, and Madera Canyon and Mt. Lemon were cool to. Be sure to go up
in the mountains at least one day while your there.
Till next time, good luck and good birding..
Cheers,
