U. of Idaho Ornithology Class (in which I'm a student) took a field trip to
Turnbull NWR and environs today (3/28). A very nice day but a bit chilly
still w/ a brisk wind. Lots of RED-TAILED HAWKS on the way north from Moscow
w/ a couple on nests close to the road. At Rock Lake south of the refuge
were a couple of Say's Phoebes and a Townsend's Solitaire. Along Rock Lake
Rd. south of Williams Lake Rd. we saw 7 TRUMPETER SWANS and another 4 were
at the refuge itself. Around the refuge were a variety of waterfowl
inlcuding several Barrow's Goldeneye pairs. Despite the chilly day many
Marsh Wrens were singing loudly from the Cattail Marshes. Lots of
Violet-green and a few Tree Swallows over the ponds. Also had a number of
Mourning Cloaks and some nice wild flowers.
