Columbia Estuary Report - 3/29/98

Day length apparently became sufficient to get the WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS
singing this week. VIRGINIA RAILS were also singing at the Airport
Mitigation area.

A singing ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was on the bike path near parking lot
A of Ft Stevens on Friday. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at Wireless Rd and
a single CASPIAN TERN was fishing on Youngs Bay.

I did a seawatch at Ecola State Park (details in separate post). Most
interesting was a southbound COMMON TERN. The PEREGRINE pair did a
slow dance over the point. Large numbers of COMMON MURRES are staging
just off the rocks as are good numbers of PIGEON GUILLEMOTS. Single
RHINOCEROS AUKLETS, ANCIENT MURRELETS and TUFTED PUFFINS were seen as
well. There were no puffins at Haystack Rock, yet.
