Today we checked out a Great Blue Heron rookery that we first noticed =
last year. We counted 24 nests today, with herons sitting and standing =
on the nests. This rookery is along Hood Canal on the Olympic =
Peninsula. They can be seen from Hwy 101 by pulling off at the =
northerly bridge over the Hamma Hamma River. The rookery is in two =
adjacent bigleaf maples and can be easily seen now, especially with a =
spotting scope. It can be a challenge to see them once the maple trees =
leaf out. This is also an excellent spot to stop and look for bald =
eagles.
