For all you coffee and bird lovers out there, we found a place in the US that sells coffee from the coop in Monteverde, Costa Rica. For anyone who hasn't tried this coffee, it's arguably some of the best coffee I have ever tasted. The coffee is shade-grown, and is available in light or dark roast. It can be had from Montana Coffee Traders in Whitefish Montana, 1-800-345-JAVA. If you're in Monteverde, you can taste-test it at the Santa Elena Coop store across the street from Stella's bakery (another must-visit while you're there).

Yes, it's expensive. But $1 per pound is donated by MCT back to Santa Elena Cooperative and Monteverde Conservation League for habitat rehabilitation, environmental education, and sustainable agriculture projects ($60,000 so far). Given this combination of great coffee and conservation, I'll probably never buy coffee at Starbuck's again.
