So many sightings came in during the past week when I was out of town that
I will have to lump some of them together and omit some of the more common
species. Sorry about that.
On April 23, Craig Corder and Judy Stevens reported a BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER
and 11 LEAST SANDPIPERS at Crow Butte State Park. The following day they
found 2 COMMON POORWILLS at the Midway Power Station near Vernita and 6
WHITE-THROATED SWIFTS a little west of there on April 25. The poorwills
started calling about 9 pm. The swifts have to be scoped from the Grant
county side of the Columbia River.
Today Craig and Judy observed 6 RED CROSSBILLS and 2 CHIPPING SPARROWS at
the Columbia Crest Winery near Patterson. A SOLITARY SANDPIPER, YELLOW
WARBLERS, and BULLOCK'S ORIOLES at Crow Butte and a GREAT EGRET and 4
BONAPARTE'S GULLS at Whitcomb Island.
Also on April 23, Roy Patterson discovered a male RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER at
the Village at Canyon Lakes (Kennewick).
On April 26, Mike Denny heard from a person who presumably saw a male LARK
BUNTING along a slough in Burbank.
A GREAT EGRET at Kahlotus Lake was observed by Dennis Rockwell and Brent
Ripley. On April 26.
On April 28, Nancy LaFramboise found 6 LEAST SANDPIPERS among the
shorebirds previously reported on the Yakima Delta and VAUX'S SWIFTS in
West Richland near the intersection of Grosscup and Fern Streets.
The following day, Nancy and Ruth Fischer observed a LARK SPARROW at the
Yakima Delta.
Ed Rykiel reported on April 28 that the 2 LONG-EARED OWLS seen along the
bike path behind WSU produced 2 owlets. He also mentioned seeing 2 GREAT
EGRETS plus several other species along the Hanford Reach on April 26.
On April 29, Patty Pollari found a BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and a CHIPPING SPARROW in her West Richland yard.
The following day, Dennis Rockwell observed a pair of RED-NAPED SAPSUCKERS
in Two Rivers Park (Finley)
Lastly, today I watched Western Kingbirds chasing a LEWIS' WOODPECKER
around Groves Park (Richland) and saw male RUFOUS and CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS
at my feeder.
To report your own sightings, please give your name, phone number and
sightings after the tone. Thank you.
